SHIFT key "stuck"? Not hardware related.
My keyboard and mouse are acting mostly like I'm holding down the SHIFT key. Nothing I do corrects this including Ease of Access settings. What's strange is that when I reboot, it works fine for about 5 minutes. After that, it gets crazy. All the number keys at the top will only display special characters (as if shift key is being pressed). Same with all the other character keys like .,;l[] The keypad numbers function like cursor keys. If the NUM LOCK is on (or off, not sure which) it they function like SHIFT-ARROWS. Letter keys are either all caps or all lowercase depending on ALPHA LOCK, but SHIFT doesn't make a difference. The mouse will select everything to the left of what I click on. It's driving me crazy as you might expect. Really need some help. This may be related to software I tried to install on Win7 (64bit) on an Acer Desktop. Seems like it started after installing Logitech Webcam software (I've since uninstalled it). In fact, a popup showed up asking if I wanted to keep using Sticky Keys (see below) or something like that. I wasn't using Sticky Keys so I thought that was odd. EDIT: Correction, it was Filter Keys, not Sticky Keys. The same popup just showed up when I created a new USER. "Do you want to turn on Filter Keys?"

Then how are you sure its not hardware related? Have you tested the keyboard on another system? Have you install the lastest system drivers for your machine?MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

Hi,Generally it will not be a hardware device issue. You can check by connect it to another computer. Also there is no setting in Windows 7 can keep shift key sticked after reboot. For the sticky keys or Filter Keys you can find related settings in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the keyboard easier to use. Check if sticky keys is checked. If issue is not caused by above things, we will then need to check third party applications and drivers.Ttry boot into Safe Mode(reboot and keep press F8) to see if issue still exists. If not it will be a driver or application confliction issue. We can continue narrow down to find out the cause.
Then you can try the Clean Bootsteps. Please refer the steps for Windows Vista.Note: As you mentioned there is a Logitech Webcam software installed which causes the issue, you can first check if there is any Logitech related startup or service. If so, uncheck them, click OK, reboot to see if they are the cause. If issue will not occur in Clean Boot situation, please continue perform the narrow down steps to find out the root cause.

This all seams to have started after Windows updates were performed. Could be a coincidance, but worth a thought.

the issue just started today and at the moment has stopped>>well sort off and iii get these double letteerrs> this is not a joke response> i have notinstalled any logitec driveerrs< nor is filteerr?sticky keys enablleed> thiss
could be some sort of new virus>>> i"m doing an antivirus scann as iii type this but ii have a sinking feeling ii"mm going too have too reimage as well> :(
Edit: All seems to be working at the moment. I forewent reimaging instead for diagnostics. As for my hardware specifics I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 on a WD Raptor with 4 GB Ram, AMD Phenom II (Rena I believe) Triple core and AMD motherboard. My mouse
and keyboard are i-rocks and wireless with a usb dongle/receiver. Seems to be no known virus (Avast is up to date), I do have this weird bug where it won't completely restore the system but that's a little off topic. The harddrive has 91% health (used hitachi
hdd diagnostic tool). My wireless HID (human interface devices) drivers are apparently up to date. I did notice a buzzing, clicking sound when rebooting the system but after removing the dongle and rebooting and not hearing it anymore, I chalked it up to the
shift signal constantly being received. I plugged in the dongle at the login screen, logged in to windows using the on-screen keyboard and after a few tests with that activated the wireless keyboard and it's been smooth sailing since.
In conclusion, I may have to reinstall the W-HID drivers. Hope this clear it up for some, it's bizarre to me...
